Authentic Science Inquiry Learning at Scale enabled by an Interactive Biology Cloud Lab

Although national guidelines advocate for STEM education that integrates complex scientific experimentation (real labs, rather than simulations), data collection and analysis, and modeling, it is unclear how to implement authentic scien- tific inquiry for both presential and distance education. We iteratively designed and deployed an open course on the edX platform that enabled high-throughput, robust, cloud- based biology experimentation, modeling, and data analysis to facilitate inquiry-based learning. The design features of this course, including harnessing the quantitative variability inherent in living systems, render it suitable for large-scale adaptation in formal K-12 and college education.
